THE TOLL ROAD TO CONVICTION
Volatility, Responsibility, and the Cost of Owning What Others Still Doubt
The notification arrived just before dinner.
A man glanced at his phone, and the number staring back at him was far smaller than it had been only a week before. The bitcoin he had finally gathered the courage to buy had fallen sharply. The excitement he felt when he pressed the purchase button gave way to a knot in his stomach. Every warning from family, every skeptical television commentator, every friend who had rolled their eyes at bitcoin suddenly sounded much wiser than they had only days before.
Nothing about bitcoin had fundamentally changed. Yet everything inside him had.
That is the strange power of volatility. It rarely changes the asset as quickly as it exposes the heart of the person holding it.
Markets have a remarkable ability to reveal convictions we thought we possessed. It is easy to believe in something while everyone around us applauds. It is much harder to remain steady when prices fall, headlines darken, and uncertainty becomes louder than confidence. The chart becomes more than a chart. It becomes a mirror.
Jesus told a story about two builders. One built his house upon the rock. The other built upon the sand. For a time, the two houses looked remarkably similar. Both stood. Both provided shelter. Both appeared successful. It was only when the storm arrived that the difference became visible.
Storms do not create foundations. They reveal them.
Bitcoin often serves the same purpose. It reveals whether a person’s conviction was built upon understanding or excitement. Many people purchase bitcoin because they hope the price will rise quickly. Others spend months studying money, history, scarcity, incentives, and the mathematics of the protocol before they ever purchase a single sat. Both may hold the same asset, yet they are holding it for entirely different reasons.
The market eventually discovers the difference. There is an old saying that every bull market creates believers, but every bear market creates students. I have found that to be remarkably true.
Volatility is not evidence that bitcoin has failed. It is evidence that the world is still trying to understand what it is. Price discovery has always been messy. Every emerging technology, every new monetary standard, every transformational innovation has experienced periods where enthusiasm outran understanding, only to be followed by seasons where doubt appeared wiser than hope.
That is the toll road to conviction. No one enjoys paying tolls. Yet almost everyone who reaches lasting conviction has passed through them. The mistake is believing volatility itself is the greatest risk. Often the greater danger is ignorance.
A person who does not understand why they own something will almost certainly surrender it to someone who does. This is why education must always come before allocation.
Before asking how much bitcoin to own, we should first ask what money is. Before wondering where price may go, we should understand why scarcity matters. Before worrying about the next headline, we should understand the problem bitcoin was attempting to solve in the first place.
Conviction borrowed from someone else rarely survives its first storm. Conviction built through study often does. That does not remove risk. Bitcoin remains volatile. Prices can fall dramatically.
Governments may continue experimenting with regulation. Exchanges can fail. People can lose private keys. Scammers continue exploiting those chasing easy wealth. None of these realities should be ignored simply because we believe in honest money.
Wise stewardship has never required pretending risk does not exist.
Scripture consistently calls God’s people toward prudence. Proverbs tells us that the prudent give thought to their steps. Jesus instructed His followers to count the cost before building. Wisdom does not eliminate uncertainty. It prepares for it.
Perhaps that is one of the most misunderstood aspects of bitcoin. Freedom always carries responsibility.
The same technology that removes dependence upon a central authority also requires individuals to grow in knowledge, discipline, patience, and preparation. Self-custody is empowering precisely because it demands maturity. The protocol cannot substitute for wisdom.
Neither should enthusiasm.
Leverage promises shortcuts where stewardship requires patience. Borrowed money often magnifies borrowed conviction. Markets have humbled generations of people who believed urgency was more important than preparation.
The Founders understood this lesson in a different arena.
The Continental Army endured years that gave little visible evidence victory would ever come. Valley Forge was not inspiring because circumstances were favorable. It became historic because conviction endured while circumstances were unfavorable. Washington’s confidence was not built upon comfort. It was built upon purpose.
Faithful stewardship often looks remarkably ordinary while the storm is passing overhead. The temptation is always to stare at the weather. Wisdom keeps examining the foundation. Bitcoin removes the central issuer. It does not remove personal responsibility. That may be its greatest educational gift.
Eventually every steward must answer the same question. Was I trusting the price? Or had I finally learned to understand the foundation beneath it?
Kingdom Principle 👑
Storms do not create conviction. They reveal whether our foundation has been built upon truth or emotion.
God calls us to become wise stewards, not impulsive spectators. Faithfulness grows through understanding, patience, humility, and trust in Him rather than in circumstances that change from one season to the next.
Prayer 🙏
Heavenly Father, thank You for being our unchanging foundation when everything around us appears uncertain. Give us wisdom to pursue truth before excitement, understanding before action, and stewardship before speculation.
Teach us to build our lives upon principles that endure every storm. Strengthen our character, deepen our patience, and help us trust You above every market, headline, or temporary circumstance. May our confidence always rest in Jesus, whose Kingdom cannot be shaken.
In Jesus’ name, Amen. 🙏📖⛰️₿🕊️👑
