Riders Up | Kentucky Derby Edition
Preparation, probability, and the sovereignty that decides it all
There is nothing quite like the Kentucky Derby.
Churchill Downs comes alive in a way that feels almost untouched by time. The pageantry, the colors, the traditions that have carried forward for generations. Roses draped over the winner, hats that feel more like statements than accessories, a crowd suspended between celebration and anticipation. It all builds toward two minutes that somehow carry more weight than their duration would suggest. It looks elegant on the surface. Beneath it is something far more exacting.
Competition. Probability. Discipline.
Every year, I step into this moment with intention. It has become a rhythm for me. A tradition that is equal parts reflection and analysis. Yes, it is entertainment. Yes, it is a race. But over time, it has also become something more. A way to study how decisions are made under uncertainty. A way to understand how patterns form, how conviction is built, and how outcomes ultimately unfold.
This marks my 28th year stepping into a puzzle that has humbled even the sharpest racing minds. What began as handicapping has evolved into something far more meaningful. It has become an annual checkpoint. A moment to step back and reflect on what actually matters. The Derby may be the backdrop, but the real story is everything that has unfolded between last May and now. Through every season, every decision, every high and low, God has remained at the center, faithfully guiding both the seen and the unseen. So before the gates open beneath the Twin Spires, I pause. I give thanks. And I prepare, once again, to chase greatness with clarity, conviction, and trust. Since 2013, when the Derby shifted to the points system era, the race has quietly revealed a more structured identity. It still feels unpredictable to the casual observer, but the path to the starting gate has become far more defined. Horses must now earn their place through a series of qualifying races that test stamina, positioning, and consistency. The profile of a winner is no longer random. It has form. It has precedent. It has a pattern for those willing to study it.
What looks like chaos is often structure misunderstood.
That is where handicapping begins. It is not guessing. It is not chasing a feeling. It is the discipline of reading past performances, understanding pace scenarios, evaluating how a race may develop before it ever does. It is pattern recognition applied with humility, because no matter how much work is done, the outcome is never guaranteed.
And that is where the deeper lesson reveals itself.
Last year, the winner was Sovereignty (and a massive selection for me). Not just a horse, but a reminder. Because every race, every market, every meaningful decision in life exists at the intersection of preparation and something far greater. You can study the form. You can understand the probabilities. You can position yourself as well as possible. But you do not control the outcome.
Scripture makes this unmistakably clear. “The horse is made ready for the day of battle, but victory belongs to the Lord.” — Proverbs 21:31 (NIV)
That is the tension we live in. We prepare as if it depends on us. We trust knowing it ultimately does not.
This year, my selection is Commandment.
The name alone carries weight. Not because it guarantees anything, but because it points to something higher. Order. Structure. Truth that exists whether we acknowledge it or not. In a race defined by speed and pressure, those foundations matter more than most realize. Commandment fits the profile that has emerged in this era. The preparation, the path, the underlying structure that has consistently produced winners since the points system reshaped the race.
But more than that, it represents alignment. Because patterns can guide decisions, but only truth sustains conviction.
That same principle extends far beyond Churchill Downs. Markets operate with similar tension. People search for signals, chase momentum, react to noise. But over time, what endures is not speed. It is structure. It is discipline. It is the ability to hold conviction when outcomes remain uncertain.
This is one of the reasons bitcoin remains my core holding by a wide margin. Not because it moves the fastest, but because it holds its form. Fixed supply. Transparent rules. A system that does not adjust to opinion or pressure. It does not remove volatility, just as preparation does not remove risk in the Derby. But it provides something far more valuable. A foundation rooted in truth.
And that is ultimately what this race reminds me of each year.
You can read the form. You can understand the structure. You can make the most informed decision possible. But in the end, you watch. Because the outcome will reveal what preparation alone cannot.

But for now, we wait.
Twenty horses. One race. And a reminder that while we prepare with intention, we trust in something far greater than ourselves.

Prayer 🙏🏇✝️
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the gift of preparation, for the ability to think, study, and act with intention. And thank You for the reminder that You alone determine the outcome.
Help us to walk in wisdom, to prepare diligently, and to trust You fully. In moments of uncertainty, give us peace. In moments of decision, give us clarity. And in all things, anchor us in Your truth.
Guide us not just in this race, but in every area of our lives where we seek direction and understanding.
In Jesus’ name, Amen. 🙏✝️🏇
